Gwen Kinsey Stroud A.C. was first female athlete home in her age category (40-44) and was second female athlete overall in Saturday’s rain drenched Cardiff Sprint Triathlon. In a competitive field of 96 athletes, she was only pipped to the post, by Hollie Elliot, an under 23 age group athlete! After 1 hour and five minutes of racing,750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run, she was just 11 seconds behind the overall winner . Gwen was very pleased that she had stayed upright on the bike, having to handle a treacherously wet cycle circuit with lots of technical turns.
Jonathan Hodgkins from The Bike Works, South Woodchester, said, “We are very pleased that Gwen has teamed up with us, she is a very switched on athlete who realised that to increase her speed in the cycling section she needed to address bike set up and handling techniques as well as specific speed training. Together we devised a training element to include short cycling circuits to improve speed and cornering technique, simulating the type of courses Gwen would be racing on. “
“I would like to thank Luke Hodgkins, The Bike Works mechanic who prepared my bike for the race. It was reassuring as I came into the turns at speed, that my Orbea bike was safe and sound! Said Gwen.
Gwen will be competing in July as an age category GB athlete in the European Sprint Triathlon Championships in Geneva.
