Seen your dream group set on a cheap frame at a killer price?
The question (maybe in the back of your mind on a long high speed descent) is how is the cost saving made?
These cheap bike manufacturers will be making most of the saving on the frame. They will have no research and design costs, by re – using old carbon mould technology and old designs that the major brands have discarded . Being price point driven the cheap bike producers will be sourcing frames from manufacturers with the same mindset.
Carbon bike frames are produced using a labour intensive lay up layering process. So just because a frame comes from a major brand old frame mould and looks externally similar it does not follow that it will be the same product in terms of internals and performance characteristics. It is critical to the frame strength and stiffness proportions that the operative expertly and carefully utilises different carbon types in different orientations. It is this process quality that the high end brands ensure is consistently delivered adding value as well as price to their product.
Having shopped around far east manufacturers for the lowest prices, cheap bike frame manufactures are totally in the hands of factory manufacturers with regard to process and quality. The downward price pressure will probably require increased productivity from the factory at the expense of the performance characteristics of the frame and maybe even the well being of workers. When goods arrive in the container following a 6 week sea journey, not as originally specified the cut price brands cannot return the goods. The frame will have to go to the consumer as is. If this doesn’t matter to you and low price is driving your purchasing decision then we probably will not be able to help – all the best!
A BIKE IS A BIKE ? WRONG !
Of course some Taiwanese carbon-frame factories are capable of producing the highest quality and most advanced carbon bicycle frames in the world. Some of the bikes that we sell such as Orro and Tifosi will have frames produced in the far east. But we have selected these products because the Britain based companies give us confidence that the manufacturing process as describe above is not being compromised in a race to mass produce a cheap bike.
Our Basso framed bikes are 100% made in Italy.
So what I hear you say, what matters most is that it is made well, made safe, and rides as it should. But in abstruse ways it does matter. A bike’s terroir is a large component of what makes it, it. What draws many to one bike over another is the stuff only that bike has; not the stuff all bikes have. Most high-end carbon road racing bikes are made in Taiwan ; only Basso carbon frames come out of the Basso carbon factory near Bassano Del Grappa.
A WORD ABOUT TERROIR
Terroir is a word associated with wine, it is the back story to its production, the vine, the composition of the soil, the climate, the altitude and even the people that produce it. It is about connection to place and people.
In a similar way it could be said a bicycle can have “Terroir” and add value to its ownership. For example, Italian bikes are an iconic part of the history and present day drama of cycling. Imagine beautiful scenic Italy, a bicycle and its rider heroically climbing a majestic mountain pass, daringly descending hairpin bends flashing past terraced vineyards, riding full gas through an historic town packed with enthusiastic families, having deserted the buzzy bars for a moment to cheer on every single rider in the race. Got the picture? Inspired? Whether it is a Sunday morning spin to your favourite coffee stop or something more challenging make your own cycling story on a bike you love.
ADD PASSION TO YOUR PURCHASE
Here at The Bike Works we have an Italian back story too. Our mechanic Luke was partly made in Italy, my wife’s mother was from the Veneto region and her brother rode the Giro d’Italia in the late 1970s as well as many other iconic pro races. We love the Dolce Vita, so if you want to add some passion to your purchase come and see us.
